Heads up: Getting married at Vancouver City Hall isn’t like in the movies!

Getting married at Vancouver City Hall might be different than what you think a typical City Hall wedding entails. In the movies, and in other jurisdictions around the world, a couple can walk into City Hall on a whim and just get married by any city official. This is often seen as the quickest, easiest and least formal way to get married. “We’ll just go down to City Hall and get hitched!”

In Vancouver, and in most of Canada, this isn’t how it works. In BC, marriage licenses are handled provincially, so city staff and officials working at City Hall can’t marry you. You also can’t waltz in whenever you feel like it; weddings at Vancouver City Hall must be booked ahead of time and often book out months in advance.

Essentially, think of a Vancouver City Hall wedding like booking any other wedding venue. You’re booking the space and working with an experienced, efficient team who are very organized in running weddings. However, like with any venue, you’ll need to bring in your own vendors, including your own officiant, and book in advance.

What do you need to have a Vancouver City Hall wedding?

In order to get married at Vancouver City Hall through their Council Chamber micro-wedding package you’ll need to:

Young Hip & Married’s Intimate Elopement + Photography package works perfectly for Vancouver City Hall weddings. In this package, you’ll have a short and sweet elopement ceremony conducted by a licensed wedding officiant and a photographer to capture all of the special moments before, during and after your City Hall wedding.

What happens during a Vancouver City Hall wedding?

A wedding at Vancouver City Hall takes place in the Council Chamber. The couple and wedding officiant will stand in the centre of the chamber while guests can sit in the semi-circle seats around them. Each couple is given a 30 minute time slot for their ceremony, which often leaves extra time for photos and signing the marriage licence.

Once the ceremony is over, couples can ring the ceremonial bell over the chamber doors to mark the occasion. Many couples then continue taking wedding photos inside and outside the building.

How much does it cost to get married at Vancouver City Hall?

To get married at Vancouver City Hall costs $275+GST for up to 10 people on Thursday dates or $550+GST for up to 20 people on Friday dates. Please note that these costs are current for 2023 weddings; reference the City of Vancouver website for up to date costs and inclusions.

This cost includes a 30 minute time slot in the Vancouver City Hall Council Chamber for you, your guests and your vendors to conduct your ceremony. Only ceremonies are permitted, no receptions, and you are not allowed to have any food or drinks besides water. City Hall is also a scent-free premises, so skip the perfume and cologne!

Importantly, the City Hall fee does not include any of your vendors, such as your wedding officiant or photographer, and it does not include your marriage licence. You will need to pay for these things separately and in addition to the City Hall venue fee.

How many guests can you have at a City Hall wedding in Vancouver?

Vancouver City Hall offers two packages for their Council Chamber micro-weddings: up to 10 attendees on Thursday slots and up to 20 attendees on Friday slots. Note: This number includes the couple getting married and any wedding vendors. So instead of counting guests, you’ll need to count the number of people in the room.

At a minimum, you will need five people in the room to be legally married: the couple (2), the wedding officiant (1) and the witnesses (2). For a Thursday wedding, you can invite 5 more guests (or 4 if you want to hire a photographer). And for a Friday wedding, you can invite 15 more guests (or 14 if you want to hire a photographer).

If you’d like to share your Vancouver City Hall wedding with more people, wifi is available in the Council Chamber and you’re encouraged to share your celebration virtually. Who doesn’t love a virtual Zoom wedding?

Can you decorate the space at City Hall?

Yes, you are able to decorate the Council Chamber at Vancouver City Hall for your wedding, but there are some rules you’ll need to follow!

  1. You must provide your own decor. City Hall won’t be putting a floral arch together for you.
  2. You must be able to pack in, set up, tear down and pack out all of your decor during your 30 minute slot. You won’t have access to the space early to decorate and you can’t stay beyond your 30 minutes to clean up.
  3. All decor must be zero-waste. City Hall stipulates that this also means “vases for flower bouquets may not contain any water.”
  4. You cannot affix your decor to the space in anyway. No tape, tacks, nails or anything else. Your decor, just like the proverbial cheese, must stand alone.
  5. You are not permitted to have balloons, bubbles, confetti or rice inside or outside City Hall.

Given the strict rules and limited time, we suggest you stick to pretty basic decor, if you bring any decor at all. The Council Chamber room has a very distinct look that would be difficult to cover with decor, given the rules above. Instead, we encourage you to embrace the look!

Remember, you can always take wedding photos against a different backdrop before or after your Vancouver City Hall wedding.

Where should you take wedding photos at Vancouver City Hall?

As you can see by scrolling through this post, there is no shortage of beautiful places to take photos in and around Vancouver City Hall!

Your ceremony photos will take place in the ceremony space, the Council Chamber. After that you can take photos in the building, as well as around the striking exterior and in the City Hall Garden, giving you a perfect mix of urban concrete and lush greenery.

Keep in mind that spaces around City Hall are not exclusive, meaning you’ll have to share them with others and they can’t be reserved for your wedding photography. Also keep in mind that City Hall is a busy workplace, so while you can snap a few photos on your way out, it wouldn’t be appropriate to plan a full photoshoot inside the building.

Many of our elopement couples will continue onto a secondary location for more photos, such as to a nearby beach or park. Our photographers would be happy to work with you to decide on a location so you can get the elopement photos you’re looking for!

What Vancouver City Hall wedding dates are available?

Vancouver City Hall makes select Thursday and Friday morning and afternoon time slots available for weddings. In 2023, there were 1-4 dates available per month. As of the time of writing, there are no dates left for this year.

To find out about 2024 City Hall wedding availability, you can subscribe at the bottom of this webpage for updates.

Is there parking at Vancouver City Hall?

Yes, there is parking available for your Vancouver City Hall wedding. Free parking is available for two wedding cars and one officiant car during your ceremony in a designated area.

Note: You will need to move your car after your ceremony time if you want to stick around City Hall for photos. Otherwise, there is paid parking available on the streets around City Hall for you and your guests.

What is City Hall’s cancellation and refund policy for weddings?

Vancouver City Hall’s cancellation and refund policy for weddings is as follows, “You may reschedule if you contact us at least 60 days prior, and if a new time is available within four months of the original date. No refunds.”

Keep in mind that you’ll also need to work with the cancellation and refund policy of your other vendors, such as your wedding officiant and photographer, if you need to change or cancel your elopement. You can check out Young Hip & Married’s refund, cancellation and change policy for elopements here.

Interview with Capture Media: Learn more about what happens when you add videography to your elopement

Get to know our videography partner, Simon of Capture Media, in the below vendor interview. Learn all about his videography experience and style, plus find out what couples get wrong about wedding and elopement videography!

Take it away, Simon!

Please introduce yourself! How long have you been a wedding videographer and what first got you into videography?

Hi! I am Simon and I have been a wedding videographer for 10 years. I started my professional career in computer science, but was never fulfilled due to the lack of creativity, sitting at a desk for hours, and lack of interaction with people. I had always had an interest in the art of creating films, I started creating highlight videos of family vacations, adventure videos, etc.

In 2013, I started my videography business when I provided videography for my wife’s sister’s wedding, and my journey began. After a number of years, I eventually went full time and still love the creative outlet that it provides me.

Summarize your videography style in 15 words or less!

Capturing magical moments, having fun, being creative, making the process as easy as just hanging out!

What can couples expect with you as their elopement videographer?

My working style is laid back, fun and creative! One of the most important things as a videographer is to make my couples comfortable on camera and I do that by being human, not a robot with a camera, and having fun together!

Why do you love elopements?

Elopements are a great way to get married because they typically provide a day that is more intimate than a regular wedding and you get to experience your wedding day fully without all the stress of a large wedding. It is a much more simple and beautiful way to get married as elopements are more focused on the couple’s love in a more private setting.

What are your favourite elopement locations in/around Vancouver?

Stanley Park, Whistler, Squamish, Golden Ears, or any mountain top. If not accessible by helicopter, I am always open to packing my camera and hiking up with you!

Check out more suggestions for where to elope in the city of Vancouver and where to elope in Vancouver off the beaten path!

What are your best tips for couples eloping? How can they prepare for their elopement videography session?

Enjoy and cherish the day! Many couples can get caught up in the stress of getting married, but with an elopement you don’t have to! Your videographer & photographer are here to make sure that you not only look amazing on camera, but also to make sure that you enjoy your day and not feel awkward on camera.

As far as preparation, just show up and be yourself! Trust that we will be there to guide you through the process.

What do couples get wrong about wedding or elopement videography?

Some couples think they need to practice poses, work on their smile, etc. prior to their wedding or elopement. They may be looking at other wedding videos or photos wondering how they are going to pull that off. But if you have a good videographer, they will direct you and all this will come naturally.

Share a favourite elopement memory with us!

One of the best moments actually came after the elopement when I was delivering the video to my couple. Instead of just a thank you email, the bride went out of her way to call me and was in tears of joy over the phone.

“Wedding & elopement videography can be hard work but when you know that you are impacting a couple’s life with a video they will watch forever, it makes the job very fulfilling.”

When you’re not filming elopements or weddings, how do you like to spend your time?

I enjoy spending time in nature going on adventures, camping, and unplugging from the digital world we live in. I love fitness, so naturally I love trekking mountains, enjoying the views and quiet time that it provides, and in the winter getting on my snowboard to enjoy some fresh powder. Golf is another one of my passions; I usually am out on the course a few times a week as it’s the perfect way to recharge.

We’re so excited to introduce you to one of the newest members of our Intimate Elopement + Photography team, Victoria elopement photographer Jade Mutter of Jades Photography. Jade is bringing her 12+ years of wedding photography experience to couples getting married on Vancouver Island.

Learn more about Jade, her advice for couples tying the knot and her favourite places to elope in Victoria below!

Of course, all photos in this post are by Jade!

Please introduce yourself! How long have you been a wedding photographer and what first got you into photography?

My name is Jade Mutter and I’m the owner and operator of Jades Photography. I’ve been in the business of photographing weddings for 12 years – wow that makes me feel old! I’ve always been interested in photography – I can remember going through family members’ old photo albums in awe of seeing my loved ones when they were young. It always amazed me how photos were the only real memory that we have that is tangible, when things change and people we love are no longer with us. They are such an important piece of history.

It wasn’t until I was in Victoria in my 20’s and decided I needed to pick up a hobby that I considered delving into photography, aside from playing around with my grandparents’ old film cameras. I registered for some courses at Camosun College and started a website where I posted my creative work. Eventually I started offering very discounted family sessions to practice with real live humans.

From there a friend asked me to photograph her wedding and even though I was terrified, I did it. I absolutely fell in love with wedding photography from that very first day. The rush of the pressure to capture every moment, bearing witness to some of people’s happiest moments and even the sheer exhaustion that set in after. Since then I’ve never looked back!

Summarize your photography style in 15 words or less!

Candid, fun, emotive, natural, relaxed and timeless.

black and white victoria elopement photo with jades photography

black and white victoria elopement photo with jades photography

What about your working style? What can couples expect with you as their elopement photographer?

My approach to photography is very easygoing. I am a relaxed person by nature and have been told that I make people comfortable around me almost instantly. I come into every session as prepared as possible but I also allow things to flow naturally. I like chatting with my couples a bit beforehand so I can get to know them and read their personality and also how they interact with each other.

Some couples are more shy and others are more outgoing; I believe the key to a successful session is not only the clients loving the outcome of the photos when they are delivered, but of actually having fun and feeling like yourselves while I am taking your photo. I allow space for everyone to show up as they truly are and I will never ask you to do anything you are not comfortable with.

All in all, I want every couple to feel like their time with me was so much more enjoyable than they ever thought it could be taking photos!

Why do you love elopements? Why should couples consider eloping in Victoria, BC?

Elopements truly have my heart. I believe that having an intimate wedding allows couples to enjoy their day their way and without the stress of all the logistics that can sometimes distract from why you are there in the first place! I’m all about genuine connection and I really believe that comes through in elopements. There’s no fluff, no drama, just you and your partner and I am absolutely here for every moment.

Victoria is the perfect elopement location because we live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world! There are jaw dropping and easily accessible locations that lend themselves perfectly to elopements AND set the scene to make epic photos.

young hip & married intimate elopement + photography with victoria officiant charlie and jades photography

What are your favourite elopement locations in Victoria?

Glenco Cove: This is a little known secluded beach that is my go-to if you want a private waterfront location for your Victoria elopement photos. It has some really epic black rocks on one end, a private beach, a really cool staircase and a beautiful water view from the top. I often see whales here as well!

Kitty Islet: This is another pretty private location that you often have to yourself for elopement photos. The rocks are really beautiful because they are quite dark but have some yellow moss in them and the ocean view is spectacular.

Mount Doug: Mount Doug is easily accessible yet it feels like you are in a far away magical forest. On one side there is a beach and the other there is a dense forest with huge trees. If you decide to head to the top for photos, the view of the city is unparalleled and I think it’s the best sunset in the city!

What are your best tips for couples eloping in Victoria? How can they prepare for their elopement photography session?

I would suggest to find a location that suits your needs and vision as well as a team of people that are highly qualified to make your dream elopement happen! Communication beforehand is key so that everyone can ensure the day runs smoothly and you get the outcome you desire both in the elopement experience and the finished product of photography.

What do couples get misunderstand about wedding or elopement photography?

I have found a lot of times that people feel they need to incorporate traditional elements into their wedding day even though they have no idea why. From the traditional wedding wear, to the flowers or vows, do things YOUR way! Get creative and think outside the box.

Share a favourite elopement memory with us!

I love the elopements where people are unapologetically themselves. I photographed two brides once who had their closest friends dance down the aisle with them. Everyone was wearing sunglasses as well! It was the most fun entrance I’ve ever seen and totally showcased their fun, easygoing personalities.

Victoria wedding elopement couple by Jades Photography

When you’re not photographing elopements and weddings, how do you like to spend your time?

I am usually hanging out with my husband and our daughter; we love to paddleboard and just be beach bums in general. I love a good book, a nice glass of wine and some sunshine. I’m also a huge music fan and love to go to live concerts.

What is the best part about officiating weddings?

I love helping people to tell their stories. Stories are part of what connects us as human beings. During a wedding, I love helping the couple make their story come to life in a new and refreshing way. I see myself as a facilitator and guide; the story is really about you!

The most challenging part?

The challenging part around officiating is the pressure I put on myself. I want your wedding to be absolutely perfect, and I would be lying if I said I don’t still feel some nerves just before the couple walks down the aisle! I use that energy as a catalyst to make sure everything is exactly as it should be.

Why should couples get married in Victoria or on Vancouver Island?

I was born and raised on Vancouver Island, and absolutely love this place. The Greater Victoria Area has so many unique venues, ranging from perfect hideaways for elopements, to grand and beautiful hotels and halls that are excellent for larger gatherings. I especially love weddings that incorporate some of our local culture and environment!

What are some of your favourite wedding venues or elopement locations on Vancouver Island?

I love Cedar Haven near Sooke. It’s an incredible and intimate venue nestled right in the forest! East Sooke has many B&B’s and smaller vacation rentals overlooking the water, perfect for smaller or mid-sized weddings. Sea Cider is an orchard and wedding venue in Saanich, and is a fantastic place to get married!

And of course, for those looking for a truly grand and lavish experience, there is The Empress, right in the heart of Victoria!

Share a wedding story! What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve ever officiated?

I’ve had so many lovely weddings this past year it’s hard to pick just one! During one of my first custom weddings the couple toasted with Caesars, drunk out of custom engraved mason jars they had made while they were dating.

Another took place on a tiny island near Sidney, BC. Everyone in attendance camped on the island and the ceremony itself took place on a rock bluff overlooking the ocean. Truly spectacular!

When meeting with a couple, what’s the first question you like to ask them?

I like to ask a couple about their story. What brought them together? What are their shared interests and values? And why have they chosen their particular date?

What is the best compliment a couple has ever given you?

A couple once told me that their guests thought I was a close personal friend of theirs! This is the best compliment.

If you had one piece of advice for couples looking for a Victoria wedding officiant, what would it be?

Take your time! Pick someone who matches your energy and values, someone who will make your day enjoyable and memorable!

What is your dream ceremony setting?

I would love to do an adventure elopement by helicopter one day! Performing a wedding on the top of a mountain sounds amazing.

Need a BC marriage licence for your legal wedding in British Columbia but confused about the process? Wondering how to get one, where and when?

We’ve got you covered! As wedding officiants in BC since 2010, we’ve married thousands of couples and signed thousands of marriage licences. We know the process can be confusing, so we’re more than happy to help walk you through it.

Below we’re diving into the most frequently asked questions our couples have about getting their marriage licence and ensuring their BC marriage certificate is correct. Read on to learn more!

What are the BC marriage requirements?

In order to be legally married in BC you need:

  • Two partners who are willing and able to marry one another
  • A licensed wedding officiant or commissioner to perform the ceremony
  • Two witnesses
  • A BC marriage licence which will be signed by the couple, officiant and witnesses following the ceremony

Is a BC marriage licence the same as a BC marriage certificate?

No, these are two different documents. A BC marriage licence is the document you obtain before your wedding and sign at your ceremony. A BC marriage certificate is the document you receive in the mail after your wedding to show that your marriage was registered and that you are legally married.

Do we need a marriage licence to get married in BC?

Yes. If you want to get legally married in BC, you need to obtain a marriage licence and sign it with your witnesses and licensed officiant at your wedding ceremony. If you are getting married in BC, you need to obtain a marriage licence in British Columbia (you can’t obtain it in another province).

Who can apply for a BC marriage licence?

Only the couple getting married can apply for and receive their marriage licence in British Columbia. This is not a task that your wedding planner, wedding officiant, friend or family member can do for you.

In BC, only one member of the couple needs to be present to apply for and receive the licence, but they must have ID for both parties. In some other provinces, both members of the couple must be present.

What documents do we need to get married in British Columbia?

In order to apply for a BC marriage licence you must have primary ID for both members of the couple. Primary ID includes:

  • Birth certificates
  • IMM/immigration forms
  • Permanent resident cards
  • Citizenship cards

Driver’s licences and passports may be accepted at the issuer’s discretion.

You will also need to have the following information for both parties in order to complete your license

  • Full legal names
  • Birth dates
  • Place(s) of birth
  • Address

Where do we get a BC marriage licence?

You must apply for and buy your BC marriage licence in person at any Marriage License Issuer in BC. You can buy a marriage licence anywhere in the province; you don’t have to buy your licence in the same city that your wedding is taking place.

To find an issuing location near you, visit https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/life-events/marriage/marriage-licences and click on “Search for a Marriage Licence Issuer.”

Conveniently, many London Drugs locations sell BC marriage licences. To find a London Drugs near you that issues marriage licences, visit https://www.ldinsurance.ca/marriage-license-locations.

Can we get a BC marriage licence online?

No, you cannot get a BC marriage licence online. You must go in person to get your licence.

How long does it take to get a marriage licence in BC?

Marriage licences in British Columbia are received immediately. You apply in person where an issuer will check your ID and verify your details. You will then pay the fee and leave with your marriage licence in hand.

If there’s no line, the whole process will only take a few minutes!

How fast can you get married in BC?

There is no waiting period in BC – as soon as you have your marriage licence, you can get married. To get married, you will also need someone who can legally marry you (like a wedding officiant!) and two witnesses to attend your ceremony and sign the paperwork.

At Young Hip & Married, we’ve had couples reach out to us on a Friday to get married that same weekend. So a wedding ceremony can come together quickly! Of course, we appreciate a little bit more notice to process your booking and get you matched with an officiant. But if you’re in a rush to tie the knot, don’t hesitate to reach out.

How much is a marriage licence in BC?

Currently, a BC marriage licence costs $100 and is non-refundable. If you lose your licence, you may return to the issuing location and ask for a replacement.

How do we contact someone about our BC marriage licence?

If you have questions about your BC marriage licence, you can contact the BC Government Vital Statistics Agency by phone, inquiry form or mail.

By phone:

  • Victoria: 250 952-2681
  • Toll-Free within BC: 1 888 876-1633

How long is a marriage licence valid for in BC?

A British Columbia marriage licence is valid for three months from the date of issue (the day you apply and receive your licence). So you could pick up your licence from three months in advance all the way up to the morning of your ceremony.

When to get a marriage licence in BC

You can pick up your licence anytime within the three months before your wedding. But we suggest picking up your BC marriage licence 4-6 weeks before your wedding date. That way, you have enough time to fix any mistakes but not so much time that things get lost.

We don’t recommend picking up your licence right at the beginning of the 90 day validity period. Just in case something happens, like your wedding gets delayed or you forget to bring your licence and have to sign it at another time, you want to give yourself some buffer room. Picking it up three months in advance gives you too much time to forget and misplace your licence!

We also don’t recommend waiting until the very last minute to get your licence. The last thing you want to do on the morning or even week of your wedding is stress about getting to a licence issuing location. And just in case a location is closed or you forget to bring your ID, you don’t want to run out of time to try again.

*IMPORTANT* Double check your marriage licence is 100% accurate!

It is critical that the information on your marriage licence is 100% accurate. The person issuing your licence should ask you to double and triple check all of the information before they print the licence.

While it may feel silly to check your own name, take your time reading through everything. Is your name spelled correctly? Is it in the right order? Is your birth date right?

Sadly, we’ve seen situations where an innocent mistake is made on a marriage licence but a couple doesn’t catch the error until their marriage certificate arrives in the mail.

Unfortunately, at that point, you will have to go through a tedious process to change your marriage record, since the marriage has been registered with Vital Statistics. This includes filling out forms, getting certified copies of your ID, paying fees and working with a notary or lawyer.

Don’t let something as simple as a missing middle name create a huge headache in your first weeks of newlywed life!

You also want to make sure the address you provide on your licence is your accurate mailing address. This is where your marriage certificate will be mailed to after your marriage is registered.

What other information is needed to fill out a BC marriage licence?

In addition to the information you provided to your issuer to get your licence (full names, birth dates, places of birth, address), you are also asked to provide information about your parents. This information is collected by your wedding officiant ahead of time and reported to Vital Statistics.

Vital Statistics asks for the following information for both partners (unfortunately in heteronormative terms):

  • Father’s Surname and Given name(s) and Birth PLACE (city/town/province/country)
  • Mother’s Birth (Maiden name) and Given name(s) and Birth PLACE (city/town/province/country)

If you don’t know some or all of the above information and can’t find out, you can respond with “unknown.” If you feel uncomfortable providing this information or have a different family situation, please speak with your wedding officiant.

Who signs the marriage licence at the wedding ceremony?

At your wedding, your marriage licence will be signed by you, your partner, your wedding officiant and your two witnesses.

NOTE: You need to sign your BC marriage licence with your current, legal name. Even if you’re planning to change your last name after marriage, you must sign the licence with your legal name at the time.

Bonus: How to NOT forget your marriage licence on the big day

Worried you might forget your marriage licence on the big day? Try this trick: Leave your marriage licence with your wedding rings!

No way you forget your rings, right? We also suggest leaving the licence and rings somewhere out in the open where you can’t miss it, like on a table you pass by often.

You also have the option of bringing your marriage licence to your wedding rehearsal and asking your officiant to hold onto it ahead of your upcoming ceremony. Please double check with your officiant that this is something they’d be happy to do for you.

How do we get our BC marriage certificate after our wedding?

Every couple who gets married in BC will automatically receive a marriage certificate from Vital Statistics in the mail. This certificate comes automatically and is sent to the address listed on your marriage licence (which is why it’s important your address is correct!).

As long as you’ve filled out your marriage licence correctly and your wedding officiant has registered it with Vital Statistics, you will get your marriage certificate.

Do we have to pay or apply for our BC marriage certificate?

No, your BC marriage certificate will be sent to you automatically after your wedding. You do not need to apply for it and you do not need to pay for it.

NOTE: In many other provinces and countries, you are required to apply and pay for your marriage certificate. So if you’re getting married somewhere other than BC, you’ll need to look into how to obtain your certificate.

How long does it take to get our BC marriage certificate?

The Vital Statistics Agency states that couples receive their marriage certificate, on average, three weeks after their wedding. However, please keep in mind that this is just an average; we generally tell our couples it could take 3-6 weeks to receive your marriage certificate.

If your mailing address is more remote or you get married during a busy mail time, such as the December holidays, your certificate may arrive later than that.

What happens if we never get our marriage certificate?

If it has been much longer than 3-6 weeks and you still don’t have your BC marriage certificate, please reach out to your wedding officiant. They can confirm that your signed licence was mailed to Vital Statistics and help guide you through the process of tracking down your certificate.

Your officiant may also be able to provide you with a document number that you can use to confirm your certificate directly with Vital Statistics.

From there, you’ll want to reach out to Vital Statistics to inquire about your marriage certificate. You can do so via phone (Victoria: 250 952-2681 or toll-free within BC: 1 888 876-1633) or online form.

What happens if we lose our BC marriage certificate?

If you lose your marriage certificate or need an additional copy, you can order a new certificate in person, by mail or online. Certificates cost $27 or $60 for rush service. Please view this webpage for more information: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/life-events/marriage/marriage-certificates.

Do we need our BC marriage certificate to change our last names?

Yes, you will need your marriage certificate if you’re planning to change your last name after marriage. For a thorough walk through of the name change process in BC, please check out our guide:

Are marriage records public in BC?

Yes, marriage records are public in BC through the BC Civil Registration, but only after 75 years. You can learn more about BC Civil Registration here.

If you need to search more recent marriage records in order to prove that you are free to marry, you can make that request through Vital Statistics, paying a $50 non-refundable fee. You can learn more about that process here.

If you’re looking to get legally married, you’ll need to find a licensed wedding officiant to marry you. Without one, your marriage won’t be registered, you won’t be able to sign your licence, and you won’t receive a marriage certificate. But how do you find a licensed wedding officiant in BC to make sure your marriage is legit?

Let’s dive in and find out!

Who can marry couples in BC?

In British Columbia, a marriage commissioner or a wedding officiant can legally marry couples. Marriage commissioners are government officials and wedding officiants are independently licensed. There are also religious officiants, who are licensed and officiate weddings through their religious institution, such as a priest who can marry couples at a church.

What’s the difference between a marriage commissioner and a wedding officiant? We’re glad you asked! We wrote a blog post all about that.

And check out this blog post to learn more about who can perform a marriage in BC

Can a Justice of the Peace marry us?

In British Columbia, a Justice of the Peace is not able to marry couples. However, in other locations, JoPs do have this ability. To learn more, check out this blog post all about getting married by a Justice of the Peace.

Can a celebrant marry us?

A celebrant (also called a “wedding celebrant” or “marriage celebrant”) is usually the same as a wedding officiant – someone who is independently licensed to marry couples. The words “celebrant” and “officiant” can be used interchangeably. “Celebrant” is more commonly used in the UK and Australia whereas “officiant” is more common in North America.

How do I become a wedding officiant in BC?

Unlike in the movies, you cannot simply go online and get ordained in British Columbia. While this is possible in some places in the world, like in the US, you cannot legally marry couples this way in British Columbia.

In order to become a wedding officiant in BC, you need to be licensed. Every licensing body has their own specifications. Many require potential officiants to go through specific training or be members of certain groups in order to qualify for licensing.

Similarly, there are certain criteria that must be met if you’d like to become a Vancouver marriage commissioner or commissioner elsewhere in BC (the other type of person who can legally marry couples). This criteria can be found on the BC government website but includes requirements such as being partially retired and living in a specific location where commissioners are needed.

How do I get a wedding officiant licence?

Wedding officiants are usually licensed through a religious or spiritual institution. However, many (like those at Young Hip & Married!) are still able to deliver secular, non-denominational ceremonies without any mention of religion, if that’s what you’re looking for.

And in case you’re wondering: Young Hip & Married is not able to license people at this time! Many people who are interested in officiating reach out to us hoping to join our team. As much as we’d love to have you, we’re not able to license officiants. However, if you are already a licensed wedding officiant and want to join our team, get in touch!

How do I find a licensed wedding officiant?

Congratulations, you’ve found us! Every Young Hip & Married team member is a licensed wedding officiant who is able to legally marry couples. Meet our team and find an officiant in your area!

Looking for more wedding officiant options or we don’t currently serve your area? Find out how to find a wedding officiant in this post!

How to check if a wedding officiant is legal:

So you’ve found a wedding officiant, but how do you know that they are licensed and can legally marry you?

Start by checking out their website. Licensed wedding officiants should state on their website that they can legally marry you, complete the necessary paperwork and register your marriage. If you can’t find this information on their website, reach out and ask. A reputable officiant company should be able to confidently and quickly answer your question.

You can also read reviews about the officiant or check with your other vendors. Both past couples and current wedding vendors should be able to tell you if the wedding officiant you’ve chosen is licensed and legal.

Why would someone want to book a wedding officiant who isn’t licensed?

Sometimes, couples don’t need a licensed wedding officiant for their ceremony. For example, if a couple is planning a destination wedding, they may take care of the legal part at home before or after their international wedding. For the legal signing ceremony at home, they would require a licensed officiant who could sign their paperwork.

But for their destination wedding, they wouldn’t need someone to legally marry them. In that case, they may ask a friend or family member to perform the ceremony. Or, they may still want a professional officiant with experience to lead their ceremony – but just skip the signing of the marriage licence!

Or if a couple is renewing their vows, they wouldn’t require a legal ceremony since they are already legally married. For their renewal ceremony, they may still want to hire a wedding officiant to write a custom ceremony and deliver it in front of their guests. Once again, whether this person is licensed or not wouldn’t matter since the couple doesn’t require a legal ceremony.

Please introduce yourself! Who are you, how long have you been an elopement photographer and what first got you into photography?

Hey!! I’m Jordyn, a Lower Mainland based wedding and elopement photographer! I’ve had the pleasure of celebrating love as my job since 2019 when I graduated with my professional photography diploma. It was that program that gave me the skills, confidence, and push I needed to jump into the wedding industry and start making memories with you all!

Summarize your photography style in 15 words or less.

I focus on creating timeless photos that will last a lifetime and then some.

What about your working style? What can couples expect with you as their Vancouver elopement photographer?

I’m here to capture those epic belly laughs, the way you melt and find comfort in each other’s arms, and your joy as you adventure through life together! Although I wouldn’t say I “pose” you, I am all about giving you directions to pull out and show off your personalities. There will be moments where I take a step back and let things naturally unfold, but all you need to worry about is being madly in love with each other and I’ll handle the rest!

Why do you love elopements? Why should couples consider eloping in Vancouver?

Elopements have a special ability to take away all other distractions and perfectly highlight what this day is all about: you and your love. Eloping isn’t for everyone, but if you’re a couple who thrives on intimacy, wants to have freedom to adventure and make epic memories on your wedding day, or just wants to save the big bucks for your honeymoon or a new house – then I’d say you’re elopement material and I would 10/10 recommend it.

What are your favourite elopement locations in Vancouver?

The beauty of eloping in Vancouver is that you will never run out of options on where to shoot. I’ve shot over 100 weddings and elopements all around the Lower Mainland over the past few years, and I am still finding new and incredible places to elope!

Right now, my top favourite locations are:

  • Golden Ears Provincial Park: When I say it’s magical there, I mean it. You not only have a gorgeous lake surrounded by the most stunning, snow capped mountains, but you have the most beautiful moss covered forest just up the road. It’s amazing.
  • Stanley Park: I feel like this place has a little bit of everything. We got the ocean, incredible views of the city, a fun lighthouse, rose gardens, and gorgeous forests! Really, if you’re looking for it, Stanley Park probably has it.
  • Yaletown: I love this area for all the city vibes! There’s a few places you can host your ceremony at, such as the OPUS hotel, Brix and Mortar, or in one of the many cute parks there. Afterwards, we can go on a little adventure and get you all those epic city life photos!

What are your best tips for couples eloping in Vancouver? How can they prepare for their elopement photography session?

My #1 tip for planning your elopements (and weddings in general) is to hire people that you connect with! Your photographer and wedding officiant are people who play a huge role in your day! Surrounding yourself with a team that you trust, who take time to get to know you and your story, and who bring you joy… that, my friends, will be the biggest gift you can give yourselves for your special day.

I believe that your photography session should be a collaborative effort! I want to get to know you two, your story, what makes your heart happy, and hear all about your hopes and dreams for your elopement! We’ll connect with a Zoom or phone call and create a little game plan for your day so we can make all those beautiful dreams come true!

What do couples get wrong about wedding or elopement photography?

I feel like a lot of couples think that they have to make their wedding day look like what you would find on Pinterest, otherwise their photos will flop. I’m here to tell you that you can make your wedding or elopement as unique as your thumbprint. Fill it with things that make you happy because in the end, your wedding is not for social media consumption. Instead, it’s a chance to celebrate your commitment to each other; so make it a celebration you enjoy!

Want to hike that mountain over there and have your ceremony among the wild flowers? Yeah, let’s do it! Want to stop and grab a snack at McD’s? Heck yeah, I’ll take some nuggs! Want to get married in your pjs and spend your morning drinking coffee and making pancakes? Bring it on! No matter what your day looks like, I promise we’ll get incredible photos that are a celebration of your unique love.

Share a favourite elopement memory with us!

One of my all time favourite elopement weddings was a beautiful blend of intimacy and celebration! This couple didn’t really love being the centre of attention, so instead of having a traditional ceremony, we took a helicopter to a local mountain where they said their “I-do’s” elopement style.

It was intimate, raw, and a moment that none of us will ever forget. After soaking in the views, we flew back to their venue where all their closest family and friends were waiting to feast and party it up with them! This wedding was proof that you truly can have the best of both worlds.

When you’re not photographing elopements or weddings, how do you like to spend your time?

When I’m not shooting or editing, you can find me at a local coffee shop, exploring around my hometown, or with my family and friends absolutely destroying them at Uno.

What our couples are saying:

“We had such a great experience with Beth, Clint, and the whole Young Hip & Married team for our small elopement this summer… Our photographer, Clint, was awesome to work with. He was professional but casual and friendly in a way that made us feel comfortable in front of the camera. He had great ideas for poses and photo locations, and we never felt awkward in front of the camera. We are so glad we booked with Young Hip & Married and would highly recommend them. Thank you for taking care of everything and making our special day so memorable!” – Andrea & Paul

“[We had] a simple garden wedding at Vandusen Botanical Garden, but still it was too magical. Thanks to all your preparations and efforts to make our wedding such a huge success. Another person to thank is Clint, our photographer. He was the most wonderful person who assisted us professionally about when to take our pose. He was excellent at his job. He delivered as promised and his pictures were magnificent. Couldn’t ask for any other person to take our pictures on our most memorable day.” – Reman & Myra

“We are so happy that we chose Young Hip & Married to be a part of our wedding! Clint was a great photographer to work with and was more than generous with his time and in the final photos, which are stunning and were sent to us only a few days after the ceremony! Stevan (officiant) and Clint (photographer) were highlights of the day that stood out to our guests, and as the couple getting married we really appreciated their calm and reassuring presence, which helped keep tensions low and alleviate a lot of potential stress. Highly recommended!” – Brady & Olivia

“Jane, Clint, and Rebecca were the most helpful and accommodating during the planning of our COVID wedding… We got married on the windiest day ever, but Jane and Clint were such troopers through it all. We were absolutely blown away (pun intended) by the photos we received from Clint! My hair was so wind blown and we were both cold, so we didn’t have high hopes that the photos would turn out – but we were so wrong! Clint used the surroundings to provide us with a range of photos that felt fresh and intimate. He made us feel comfortable in front of the camera and was eager to take photos wherever we wanted. All in all – we definitely recommend Young Hip & Married!” – Maddy & Jonathan

What our couples are saying:

“Our experience with YH&M was great – from booking to the day of the ceremony, they were professional and made the whole experience totally stress-free. Emily, our photographer, made us feel comfortable from the get go, even though we tend to be camera shy folks! She gave us direction and made us feel totally at ease on the day, and we couldn’t have been more grateful! She provided us with a sneak peek of our photos promptly, and they turned out perfectly. Thank you YH&M, Jane and Emily for making our day so special!” – Jessica & Eric

“Young Hip & Married were amazing! They were extremely communicative and made the whole process very simple (even when COVID-19 made things uncertain). We chose the Elopement + Photography package and had so many amazing officiants and photographers to choose from. We chose Emily Nicole for our photographer and she captured the ceremony beautifully. We had an hour photography session with her after the ceremony and had so much fun – which is a big deal for 2 awkward and camera shy people! The photos are amazing and we will cherish them for years to come. We’re so thankful to have had Emily and Beth a part of our special day and we can’t say enough good things about Young Hip & Married! Thank you!!” – Caileen & Valentina

“Thank you SO SO much to everyone at Young Hip & Married! My new husband and I were visiting Canada from the UK and had always wanted something simple, stress free and intimate for our wedding. We certainly got that with YH&M! From the first email, right up to receiving the papers, everything was a breeze! We had the ‘Photography and Elopment Package’ with the wonderful Emily as our photographer and the fabulous Shawn as our officiant. Shawn made us feel totally at ease, as did Emily! Emily made a camera shy couple feel totally confident, like no one was even there! We couldn’t be happier with our beautiful photos! Our day was just amazing. Thank you YH&M for marrying us!” – Joanna & Mat

“Absolutely superb people and superb service! We had a very inspiring welcome to Young Hip and Married via Rebecca, who connected us with the best officiant ever, Jane Halton, and our awesome photographer, Emily, who brought a wonderful balance of warmth, professionalism and genuine happiness to our photo shoots. We also felt that the cost of these excellent people helping us out was very reasonable and on the whole, we would say that you need look no further for your wedding officiant and photographer needs. We’d give them 8/5 stars if we could!” – Tristan & Carol

What our couples are saying:

“The entire Young Hip and Married team were amazing throughout the entire process! We had an elopement wedding with last minute changes right up until the very last minute which they were very accommodating of. Erica, our photographer, was also amazing from start to finish. She is so talented at capturing every special moment throughout a wedding ceremony. She was so friendly and it felt like we were able to get all the photos in we wanted as well as her input on some more photos she thought would look beautiful also. She is so creative in her work! I hope to use her talent again in the future. We would highly recommend this amazing team to any couple getting married, from smaller elopement style weddings to larger party weddings as well!” – Chelsea & Marcus

“HIGHLY recommend using YHM for your big day ! We fortunately got the dynamic duo! We had Shawn as our officiant and his wife, Erica, as our photographer. The ceremony went flawlessly… As for Erica, well, I have had MULTIPLE companies approach me wanting to post/use our wedding photos because they turned out that good. Erica captured the day perfectly, she understood THE VIBE. I swoon over my wedding album and still look at it 3x a day. YHM was extremely easy to work with, from the first email I sent everything just fell into place for us without any headache.” – Richelle & Matthew

“Our photographer, Erica, was also out of this world. She was there for the entire process from the first email, showing us photos of locations and helping us decide on the perfect time. Erica even watched the weather and the tides leading up to our day to ensure the perfect day. Her genuine sincerity and the level of care that she puts into her clients and her work, is unmatched. We cannot imagine our day with anyone else. We are both pretty shy and Erica was able to direct us, without really telling us to pose, by just getting us to be ourselves and laugh; she was incredible. The photos are absolutely stunning; she captured every moment and every emotion in that moment. Our photos will forever make us laugh, cry and smile at all the detail and emotion she captured.

Everything with YHM was so seamless and stress-free, everything was planned so well and the communication was flawless. We wouldn’t change a thing about our day and we would recommend YHM to anyone who’s looking for something different, unique or personally tailored to what you had in mind – this group of people can make it happen. Thank you again, YHM!” – Shelby & Curt

“We were looking for a fun way to elope and from the second we met Shawn and Erica, they did not let us down. They made the experience light and fun and were so easygoing. It was all about us and the experience we were after. We took a helicopter tour to the top of a mountain which had incredible views. The ceremony with Shawn was super fun and the photography from Erica took our breathes away. We couldn’t recommend this company more and now we have an amazing memory to look back on with incredible pictures we hold near and dear to our hearts. If you are getting married, they are the best and they are great to work with.” – Lisanne & Brett
