Why we love Furry Creek – one of the best places to elope in Squamish and Whistler
This beautiful beach spot has it all: tall trees and greenery, mountains and cliffs in the background, serene water as far as the eye can see, and interesting beach landscapes with rocks, sand and driftwood. In one location, you’ll have your pick for interesting backdrops for your elopement photos.
The best part about a Furry Creek elopement is you’ll probably have the whole place to yourselves! Photographer Erica says, “This beach is my secret favourite spot in Furry Creek. I’ve done a couple of weddings here; it’s a stunning option and I have never seen anyone else on the beach before!”

Who can perform a marriage in BC? Who can officiate a wedding? Who can legally marry us?
If your head is spinning trying to figure out who can and should marry you, you’re not alone. Most engaged couples have never planned a wedding before – it’s only naturally that you won’t have all of the answers.
Below we’re breaking down who can perform a marriage in British Columbia and what you need to get legally married!
Who can perform a marriage ceremony in BC?
In order to get legally married in British Columbia, your ceremony must be officiated by a marriage commissioner or wedding officiant. Some religious leaders are also licensed as wedding officiants, but not all. The officiant or commissioner must be licensed to perform weddings in BC.
Marriage commissioner vs officiant: What is the difference?
Marriage commissioners are government officials who are appointed to their positions and perform non-religious wedding ceremonies in their specific geographic area. They must be semi-retired or retired and there is no required training or experience they need to become commissioners. Many follow a set script and have specific wording they must include in their ceremonies.
Wedding officiants, on the other hand, usually undergo specific training in performing weddings and have experience with weddings, events or public speaking. Officiants have more freedom to perform weddings throughout the province and the ability to write custom ceremonies and offer a variety of officiant services.
Wedding officiants usually cost more than marriage commissioners, though generally offer a more custom and personalized experience.
Can a justice of the peace perform a marriage in BC?
No, a justice of the peace cannot perform a wedding in British Columbia. While justices of the peace can officiate ceremonies in some jurisdictions, that is not the case in BC.
Yes, an ordained minister can perform a wedding ceremony if they are legally licensed to officiate weddings in BC. Many religious leaders and representatives are licensed through their religious bodies and are able to legally officiate wedding ceremonies.
If you want to be married by an ordained minister or other religious representative, check in with the religious institution of your choosing. They will be able to let you know if their clergy members are licensed to officiate weddings and what requirements their religious ceremonies must follow.
How to check if a wedding officiant is legal
The easiest way to check if a wedding officiant is legal and able to legally marry you is to work with a reputable company. For example, Young Hip & Married has been marrying couples for 10+ years with officiants across North America and thousands of weddings under our belt. When you’re working with an officiant company that is reputable and experienced, you shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not their officiants can legally marry you.
And if you want to double check, you can always have a conversation with your wedding officiant. A licensed officiant will be more than happy to answer any of your questions and assure you that your marriage will be legal.
If you’re getting married by a marriage commissioner in BC, you can search the BC database to ensure your commissioner is listed.
Can my friend officiate my wedding in BC?
No, your friend cannot legally officiate your wedding in British Columbia or in Canada. Unlike in the movies or in the United States, there is currently not an option for someone to go online and get ordained. To legally marry a couple in BC, you must be a licensed officiant or commissioner.
However, your friends can still be involved in your wedding ceremony! They can do readings and even help lead part of the ceremony, as long as a licensed officiant is there to facilitate, witness and sign the marriage licence. If this is something you’re interested in for your wedding, get in touch!
Can I get married at city hall in British Columbia?
Yes and no. In British Columbia, many local city halls do act as wedding venues. You can rent or book one of the rooms or outdoor sites at city hall and use that as your ceremony space.
However, you cannot simply “go down to city hall and get married.” There is no one to marry you there! Again, unlike in the movies and some other jurisdictions, city halls in British Columbia do not offer marriage services.
If you want to get married at city hall, you can rent a space and book a wedding officiant to marry you there. We’ve done a number of weddings and elopements at Vancouver City Hall. Fun fact: Newlywed couples get to ring the big bell after their ceremony!
What do you need to get married in BC?
To get legally married in British Columbia, you need four things:
Two partners who consent to marry one another
Two witnesses to observe the ceremony and sign the licence
Someone who can legally perform a marriage in BC (i.e. a wedding officiant, marriage commissioner or licensed religious representative)
Now that you know what you need to get married and who can perform a wedding in British Columbia, don’t miss out on meeting our team of BC wedding officiants. We’d love to match you with an officiant and bring your dream ceremony to life!
Choosing a wedding venue is one of the first things engaged couples tick off their wedding planning to do list. But with so many wedding venues in Vancouver BC, it can be hard to narrow it down!
So we asked our team of Vancouver wedding officiants to help you out! Below, our officiants are sharing a couple of their favourite places to get married in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list. We love so many venues in Vancouver and couldn’t possibly list them all. And while we do think these are some of the best wedding venues in Vancouver, this certainly isn’t all of them.
Planning a wedding in Vancouver? How to find the best wedding venues in Vancouver, BC:
Do your research. Check out a list of top venues (like our list below), consult wedding directories and check out venues on Google. Put together a list of your top contenders.
Get some feedback. Read reviews or reach out to friends or family who have been married at these venues. You could even join an online wedding group and ask if anyone has any firsthand experience to share.
Create a shortlist. Based on your research and reviews, create a shortlist of your top wedding venue contenders. A spreadsheet is a great place to store this info!
Contact the venues. Once you have your shortlist, reach out to each venue to confirm things like pricing, availability and inclusions. Check out this list of great questions to ask!
Tour the venues. By now, your shortlist should be even shorter and the only thing left to do is visit your remaining wedding venues in person. An in-person visit will help you get a feel for what your wedding day could be like!
(Some of) our favourite wedding venues in Vancouver
Pacific Spirit Park
Located west of the city on Point Grey, Pacific Spirit Park is an 874 hectare area perfect for private elopements in Vancouver!
“Whether you’re booking one of their clearings, or wandering off a trail to find your own intimate spot in the forest, you can’t beat the majesty of these towering, moss-covered cedars and firs as a backdrop to your ceremony. Plus, it’s usually less busy than Stanley Park!”- Officiant Beth
Brix & Mortar
In popular Yaletown, Brix & Mortar is a great option for a modern couple looking for an indoor spot to get married. Plus, it’s right next to the Seawall for beautiful photos!
“I love the indoor-outdoor vibe of their covered but well-lit courtyard, and how walking through the dark entranceway feels like entering an oasis right in the middle of downtown Vancouver! I’ve heard the food is great too.” – Officiant Beth
The Permanent
The Permanent has to be one of the most beautiful wedding venues in Vancouver, Canada. It’s a heritage building decorated in a neo-classical style and features an original Bank of Canada vault door – perfect for photo opps!
Simply put: “It’s gorgeous, with history and character!” – Officiant Shalom
Estate 248
Estate 248 is located off a golf course by Langley, BC. For couples looking for that country-chic or rustic barn experience, while still being close to all of Vancouver’s urban amenities, it’s a great fit.
“Estate 248 gives you those amazing country vibes. They have an awesome barn for your wedding ceremony and it’s a really private setting.” – Officiant Shawn
The Iron Works
Always wanted to get married in an industrial loft in the middle of downtown Vancouver? Well The Iron Works might be the best fit for you! This heritage building offers a number of studio spaces featuring high ceilings, exposed bricks and beautiful views.
“I love the gritty vibes! This place is a total hidden gem with an artistic flair.” – Officiant Shawn
Hycroft Manor
The University Women’s Club of Vancouver offers some of the most beautiful and elegant venue options for any Vancouver wedding at Hycroft Manor.
“You can have your ceremony outside even if it might rain, since the terrace is covered. You can get married in the gardens or you can hold your ceremony in a fancy room inside.
Hycroft works really well for weddings of all sizes, since they have so many venue options. Plus, you don’t need much decor because the rooms and grounds are gorgeous.” – Officiant Jane
Burnaby Mountain
At 1200 feet high, Burnaby Mountain is a forested mountain just outside of Vancouver offering views, trails, wildlife and lots of beautiful places to tie the knot.
“Check out Burnaby Mountain’s rose garden and cool totem poles. I like that it’s not super busy, unlike some other Vancouver parks, and offers gorgeous views.” – Officiant Jane
Sea to Sky Gondola
Who wouldn’t want to get to their ceremony via gondola? With sweeping views over the ocean and mountains, you’ll ride the Sea to Sky Gondola and then cross a rope bridge to one of the most scenic, and most romantic, wedding venues in Vancouver!
“Best views in all the Lower Mainland – other than a helicopter!” – Officiant Shawn
A mountaintop – the best place to elope in Vancouver!
“Our SKY helicopter package is fantastic. I love the experience of marrying people on top of the world!” – Officiant Beth
A hotel suite with a great view
We love marrying couples in their hotel suites for a romantic, intimate ceremony. Many hotel suites offer beautiful decor and views, perfect for a ceremony backdrop. Plus, you get a wedding venue and accommodation in one!
Bonus: “If you really want privacy, this is a great option!” – Officiant Jane
Pick a beach, any beach
As Vancouver wedding officiants, you know we love marrying couples on the beach! From English Bay and Spanish Banks to Iona Beach and Crescent Beach, nothing beats getting married by the ocean.
“You can’t go wrong with the views from Vancouver beaches!” – Officiant Beth
Which of our favourite wedding venues in Vancouver is your favourite? Or if your favourite isn’t on this list, let us know what it is in the comments below!
If you’re planning to elope in Vancouver, you better be planning for rain!
Even if your Vancouver elopement is bright and sunny, it’s always good to have a rain plan in your back pocket. You never know what’s going to happen in the Pacific Northwest, so it’s best to always plan for rain…just in case!
Below, we’re sharing some of our favourite options for a last minute rain plan for your Vancouver elopement. These aren’t indoor venues you’ll need to book years in advance, but places you can pivot to if the rain clouds are looming. Because rain or shine, we are going to get you married!
PS: While we have had luck holding last minute rainy day elopements at these places, we always advise our couples to look into regulations ahead of time. Not every place may be available or free to use at the last minute. Please consult each location’s website for up to date information.
Let’s check out where to head if it rains on your Vancouver elopement!
The arches outside of the Vancouver Public Library, Central Library
We love the Vancouver Public Library’s Central Library location as the perfect spot for a last minute rain plan. Not only is this building beautiful with lots of covered archways, but it’s also downtown and a short distance from many popular outdoor elopement spots, like Stanley Park and English Bay.
Plus, if you’re lucky, they may let you take a few wedding photos inside. Perfect for book lovers!
Under the Golden Ears Bridge
Golden Ears Provincial Park is one of the most popular spots for Vancouver elopements out in nature. But what happens if it rains? If you can’t find a good spot to run for cover in the park, check out the Golden Ears Bridge. We love this industrial look and the total protection from the elements.
Anywhere with good forest cover
Just because it rains on your wedding day doesn’t mean you have to head inside or call the whole thing off. You can still elope outside in the rain – just look for somewhere with good forest coverage. We particularly like the Cathedral of Trees in Stanley Park – a beautiful spot under nature’s umbrellas!
The pavilion at Portal Park
Portal Park is one of the best locations for a Vancouver elopement: it’s downtown and has a pavilion with a glass roof, covering you from the rain. Following your ceremony, you’ll find lots of photo opps nearby from busy downtown streets to water views and parks covered in flowers.
The “bus stop” at Queen Elizabeth Park
Officiant Jane stumbled upon this spot at Queen Elizabeth Park – perfect for a last minute rainy Vancouver elopement. We’ve nicknamed this place the bus stop and, like a bus stop, it provides great coverage. Once the weather clears up, you can venture back out into the park for more photos.
Your hotel suite
If it’s too miserable to get married outside, why not bring the party indoors? Since you’re eloping, you won’t need to rent out a whole hotel ballroom. You can simply host your ceremony in your own hotel suite! Some hotels even allow couples to use their common spaces or a beautiful garden area for their elopement or photos.
Your home
Local to Vancouver? Then instead of a hotel suite, you can tie the knot at home! That way your elopement will be rain-free and super personal. We’ve married lots of couples in their backyards, living rooms and covered patios. Check out our tips for an intimate at home wedding!
The greenhouse or gazebo at Sendall Gardens in Langley
Sendall Gardens is a new find for our team and we love it as an elopement location, rain or shine. This park in Langley provides lots of options for a rainy day like their greenhouse, for complete coverage, or gazebo, for partial coverage.
All around university campuses
University campuses are a great spot to tie the knot and offer lots of options to take coverage from grey clouds. Both UBC and SFU have lots of areas our Vancouver elopement couples have fallen in love with. If you’re planning to show up last minute, make sure you look into any restrictions (certain university venues will need to be booked in advance) and don’t get in the way of any students rushing to their midterms!
The gazebo at Lonsdale Quay
If you want to tie the knot in North Vancouver, the area around Lonsdale Quay is perfect for a rainy day elopement. You’ll get beautiful views of the water and can head for the large gazebo on the pier to take cover from the elements.
Around Granville Island
Granville Island is another one of our favourite places to elope in Vancouver. If it’s raining, you’ll find no shortage of areas where you can escape the rain or hide out until the worst passes. You could even hop on an Aquabus for a completely covered option on the water.
Under the Granville Street Bridge Chandelier
Speaking of Granville Island, why not elope under the stunning chandelier under the Granville Street Bridge? We love this idea for an urban city elopement with total cover from the rain. Plus, if you time it right, the chandelier may even spin for you! The nearby Seawall offers lots of options for photos after your ceremony.
Grab an umbrella for a rainy day Vancouver elopement!
Our favourite last minute rain plan for a Vancouver elopement? Umbrellas!
Umbrellas allow you to elope wherever you want – you won’t have to change your plans or move the party inside. They also add an element of fun to your elopement and make for the best photos. Opt for white, clear or brightly coloured umbrellas that will stand out in photos – instead of dark umbrellas that will hide your faces.
No matter where you choose to elope in Vancouver, don’t let the rain ruin your wedding day!
With locations across Canada and the United States, Young Hip & Married is marrying couples everywhere. But we’re especially excited to introduce you to our team of Vancouver wedding officiants, the original home of Young Hip & Married!

Let’s meet the wedding officiant team!
Officiant Shawn Miller (he/him/his)
In Shawn’s own words, “Every love story is so unique, and I have yet to hear a love story that is not worth celebrating. My goal when I do a wedding is to represent my couples in the truest form to who they are as individuals and as a couple. I want your wedding to FEEL like you. I want your guests to walk out saying, “Wow, that was so them!” I also want your guests to learn about why you work so well together, and why they have come to this big party in the first place.”

Officiant Jane Halton (she/her)
In Jane’s own words, “I’ve done large fancy weddings in hotels, casual backyard ceremonies, sandy beachfront elopements and I’ve even canoed into a ceremony! The best thing about each of them is that they represented what the couple wanted. I’d love to work with you to help create a ceremony you love. Have no idea what you want? No problem! Know exactly what you’d like? Speak right up. I’m listening.”

What Jane’s couples are saying:
“Jane is an excellent wedding officiant. We were so happy with the service that she provided. She personalized our ceremony, made us feel at ease, and spoke from the heart. Throughout it all, she was professional, yet warm and personable. She was incredibly open to aspects of our ceremony that were non-traditional. Overall, she inspired a lot of confidence in us, and we are glad she was a part of our ceremony.” – S & J
Officiant Erika Enns (she/her/hers)
In Erika’s own words, “I didn’t spend my childhood dreaming about my wedding, but as I have ventured through my own marriage, the importance of the wedding day keeps coming up. A wedding is so much more than just a good party and a beautiful dress! The vows a couple speaks to each other are so important. Twenty years into my own marriage, I think I realize now more than ever the weight of those vows.”
“Once we were connected with Erika, it was such a relief knowing the ceremony was in her capable hands and we had one less thing on the wedding planning list. The personalized ceremony she put together was both touching and heartfelt while incorporating humour. We’ve had so many people say it was their favorite ceremony ever and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend YH&M!” – Meaghan & Anthony
Officiant Lani Brunn
In Lani’s own words, “Whether your wedding happens in a forest, on a beach, in a church, a hotel or in your own backyard—it’s one of the most important moments of your life, and love truly is at the centre of it. I can’t wait to hear your story: how you met, what challenges you’ve faced, your proudest moments and of course how you got engaged. Together, we’ll create a ceremony that is just right and truly reflects your flavour, your story and your commitment to each other.”

What Lani’s couples are saying:
“Our amazing officiant was Lani from YH&M. She was so personable and we couldn’t imagine such an important day, and milestone in our lives without having her there that day. She catered to all of our requests for our ceremony, offering her opinion when asked and it was nothing short of perfect!” – Vanessa & Justin
Officiant Beth Carlson-Malena (she/her)
In Beth’s own words, “My favourite part of any wedding ceremony is the vows. I believe something sacred happens when we make promises to the one we love, surrounded by all the people who support us, and often it feels to me like time slows down to hold the weight of those beautiful words. My hope is that after all the hard work of planning, your wedding day will be a day when you can breathe easy, take it all in, savour it and really enjoy the one you love and the community who loves you both.”

What Beth’s couples are saying:
“We hired Beth Carlson-Malena as our officiant and could not be more happy. From the moment we met her, we knew we had to hire her for our wedding. She was super accommodating, thoughtful and guided us through the process in the most smooth way possible. Our guests have been raving about the ceremony and how amazing the officiant was, many asking if she knew us prior since it felt that personal. She was funny, articulate & warm. We would highly recommend her.” – Jess & Sheena
Officiant Lauren Kirkey (she/her/hers)
In Lauren’s own words, “To be able to take part in a ceremony that truly reflects your story and that is from the heart from start to finish is something incredibly unique. I want to help deliver that extra special experience for you because you’re worth it! Officiating encompasses so many things I genuinely love doing – meeting people, writing, making an impact in someone’s life at just the right moment, and leaving people feeling heard, seen and valued. It’s how I conduct weddings. It’s how I conduct my life. And I can’t wait to grow on that journey with you.”

What Lauren’s couples are saying:
“I cannot say enough good things about our officiant, Lauren! We had to make many changes to our wedding amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and Lauren (and the rest of the YH&M team) were incredibly supportive and flexible. Lauren has a genuine approach, great energy, and we felt she totally had our back every step of the way. We had so many complements from our guests in regards to Lauren – she was the cherry on top for our perfect day.” – Lisa & Darryl
Officiant Rhona Segarra (she/her/hers)
In Rhona’s own words, “I have always loved the joy, excitement and romance of weddings. From officiating a family vow at my brother’s wedding to creating a blessing ceremony at my own wedding, I’ve always felt that ceremonies should not be limited by a standardized, impersonal script. I want to create a ceremony that has deep meaning and tells your memorable story. I believe that every couple is unique and every couple deserves a beautiful and heartfelt wedding ceremony, officiated by a person who cares about people.”
“Rhona from Young Hip & Married put together an amazing ceremony for us. She took the time to get to know us and always kept in touch with us. Our families thought she did an amazing job with the ceremony. I felt like I knew Rhona very well before even meeting her face to face. It was a great experience and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a wedding officiant.” – Jenn & Scott
Officiant Curt Allison (he/him/his)
In Curt’s own words, “I believe in the power of ritual, and in particular those rituals that mark our lives in profound ways. Your wedding ceremony is one of those rituals that will shape and bless your life together. Every couple is different and brings a unique story to their wedding day. I believe your ceremony should reflect that and should be officiated by someone who wants to ensure your ceremony is as wonderful as you are.”

What Curt’s couples are saying:
“Our requests were for the wedding ceremony to be inspiring and memorable, and to ensure that guests would feel like they are a part of it, not just as audience. And Curt made sure to tick those boxes! Curt is so personable! My husband and I really love him and his vibe. Additionally, the rest of the team at YH&M were all so organized and professional. They are definitely the best in the business.” – Jewel & Goodee
Officiant Shalom Wiebe (she/her)
In Shalom’s own words, “A wedding is all about celebrating your partnership and who you are as a couple. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share snippets of your story and include meaningful traditions to create a day you’ll look back on with fondness. I love connecting with people and discovering the beauty and uniqueness of their stories. I can’t wait to work with you to create a ceremony that reflects your story, values, and essence as you enter your marriage together.”

Reschedule your Whistler helicopter elopement and hope for better flying conditions. Note that your same wedding officiant and photographer may not be available.
Still get married on your original elopement date but on the ground. For this option, we’ll head to nearby Green Lake for a scenic and secluded Whistler elopement. Your same officiant and photographer will come with you and the helicopter portion of your elopement will be fully refunded.
One of our favourite places for elopements in Vancouver is Pitt Lake. This awesome outdoor elopement venue has everything you need for an intimate ceremony and stunning wedding photos: mountain backdrops, waterfalls, marshy grasslands, forests of trees, beaches and so much more. Best of all: It’s not hard to find a private spot for your Pitt Lake Elopement – no crowds!
Pitt Lake is one of the largest lakes in the Lower Mainland and one of only a few tidal lakes in the world. At one end, it’s banked by Pitt-Addington Marsh Wildlife Management Area and Grant Narrows Regional Park. For those wondering about accessibility, many of the best trails around Pitt Lake are flat and easy to walk on.
Since it’s located near the SKY Hangar in Pitt Meadows, and since the scenery is drop-dead gorgeous, Pitt Lake is our go-to location when helicopter elopements are grounded.
Unfortunately, helicopter elopements are weather-dependent. When a helicopter can’t safely take off, our couples can choose to reschedule their helicopter elopement or proceed with an on-the-ground elopement (receiving a refund for the helicopter portion of their package, of course!). For couples who decide to tie the knot on solid ground, there’s nothing better than a Pitt Lake elopement!
Check out why we love Pitt Lake elopements (rain or shine!) and get in touch to book if Pitt Lake is the perfect spot for your Vancouver wedding!
We are so excited to welcome Keely, of Keely Rae Photography, to the Young Hip & Married team as our newest Vancouver elopement photographer. Read on to learn more about Keely, check out her amazing photography work, and see where she suggests you elope in Vancouver!
Please introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do?
Hi loves! I’m Keely from Keely Rae Photography. I’m an intimate adventure wedding and elopement photographer based out of Vancouver, BC. I’m all about those sweet and silly intimate moments; I want you to look at your photos and feel like you’re looking at a moment from an old film. It’s all about your story, intimate nostalgia, and your golden little legacy.
What first drew you to wedding and elopement photography? How long have you been photographing weddings?
Honestly, I got into this business by accident! I wasn’t super into the wedding photography industry or even into cameras in general unless it was my grandfather’s old Nikon film. During the pandemic, I had an opportunity to work closely with a wedding photographer in Whistler, and well… the rest is history! Let’s just say that my love for wedding photography sparked the same way teenagers fall in love in rom coms… passionately and with an “I’m all in” kind of vibe.
What advice do you have for couples looking for an elopement photographer?
Make sure you connect with them! There are so many photographers to choose from, all with their own style and skills, so make sure you’re choosing someone with a style you love as well as with a personality you’ll connect with!
What is your favourite moment to capture on the big day?
I call them the, “Holy shit, we’re married!” giggles. They usually take place after that first walk down the aisle as a married couple, or after that first kiss during an elopement.
When you’re not busy with weddings, how do you love to spend your time?
Usually adventuring outdoors or camping, spending time with my partner and loved ones, reading in the same spot for hours on end, making multiple cups of coffee, learning how to make sourdough bread, and thinking about my photography business (cause your girl is a low key workaholic).
What are your favourite elopement locations in and around Vancouver?
Iona Beach
Iona Beach has everything from a long stretch of sandy shore to wild grass marsh! If you’re looking for something with a little diversity, this is the place!
Pitt Lake
A classic for sure. Pitt Lake is stunning year round. You could get married by the lake, in a mountain field, or even helicopter to one of the mountains!
Golden Ears Provincial Park
If you’re looking for epic views without the gruesome hike, Golden Ears is incredible.
Wreck Beach
Wreck Beach is definitely one of the prettiest beaches in Vancouver. Though you should probably know that this gem is a nude beach! So if you’re eloping here in the summer, I’d suggest a sunrise ceremony so you won’t have any nudie photo bombers.
Pacific Spirit Regional Park
Pacific Spirit Park is easily one of the most stunning forests with easy access in the Vancouver area!
Squamish Estuary
Squamish Estuary is probably my favourite spot for elopements – not gonna lie!

But first: Do you have to change your name in BC after you’re married?
Absolutely not! You are not required to change your name after marriage in BC or Canada. You can continue using your given name.
Name changes are also not restricted to only women in hetero marriages. Men can change their names too!
Social vs legal name change
Many couples choose to use a new last name socially, but don’t change their name legally. They may do this to avoid the extra paperwork or to use a different name in different situations. For example, if you’ve published academic papers under your given name, you may choose to continue using your given name professionally (and legally) but use your married name socially.
Changing your last name socially is not something you need to do officially, as it’s not a legal or documented change. At any point you can change your name on Facebook or Instagram, make a new email address, and ask your friends and family to start calling you Mx. New Last Name.
With a social name change, all of your identification documents remain the same. You would use your new name in social settings but for identification purposes, such as showing ID at a bar or buying plane tickets, you would use your legal name.
If you want something more official than a social name change, you have two options:
Option 1: Assuming your partner’s last name
As per the BC Government, “After marriage, you can choose to continue using your own surname (last name), or you can start using your spouse’s surname. Assuming your spouse’s surname does not constitute or require a legal change of name under the Name Act.
If after assuming a spouse’s surname after marriage you decide to go back to using your own surname, you can do this at any time without a legal change of name.”
TL/DR: If you want to take your spouse’s last name in BC, you don’t have to do a legal name change. You can simply start updating all of your documents with your Marriage Certificate as proof and begin using your new name. You can also switch back to your given name at any time.
Option 2: Doing something else with your last name
Unfortunately, anything other than assuming your partner’s last name in BC is much more complicated. If you’d like to hyphenate, move your given surname to your middle name, or create a new last name legally, you will have to go through the legal name change process.
Reminder: You can do whatever you want socially! The government doesn’t care what name you use on Facebook or when you introduce yourself at dinner parties.
The name change process begins by filling out the Legal Change of Name Application. This can be done online for a fee of $137. You are also required to obtain and pay fees for fingerprinting services, a criminal record check and certification of documents. You must present your original birth certificate as a legal name change will change the name on your birth certificate.
Once you have completed the legal change of name process (4-6 week processing time), you’ll receive your Certificate of Change of Name.
How to update your Canadian/BC documents with your new last name after marriage:
With your Marriage Certificate (if you are assuming your partner’s last name) or Certificate of Change of Name (if you have legally changed your last name) in hand, you’ll then be able to start changing your documents and identification over to your new last name.
Contact Health Insurance BC (HIBC) to change your name on your Medical Services Plan (MSP). Phone 604-683-7151 or 1-800-663-7100, Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm.
Receive a confirmation letter in the mail from HIBC.
Receive your temporary ID immediately and new ID in the mail shortly after.
Important things to note:
Updating your driver’s licence when you change your name is a legal requirement in B.C.
If your name has changed previously, you’ll need to bring all linking documentation.
Passports cannot be used as identification for changing your name.
Photocopies can only be used when stamped as verified originals by the issuing government office.
To update your name on your car insurance, please contact your broker for further instructions.
PS: Moving in with your spouse? You can update the address on your BC Services Card or BC Licence online!
For more information about updating your BC Services Card click here, and for updating your BCID or BC driver’s licence, click here.
Bank and credit cards
Most Canadian banks will require you to visit a branch office in person with your Marriage Certificate or Certificate of Change of Name in order to change your last name on your account and cards. You may also be required to fill out a form or provide identification, such as your BC Services Card or driver’s licence with your new name.
If you have a bank-issued credit card, you should also be able to change your name on your card at the branch when updating your banking information. Keep in mind that all banks and credit card companies operate differently, so get in touch with yours for the exact procedure.
Social Insurance Number (SIN) card
According to the Government of Canada, “If you are legally changing your name: By law, you must update your SIN record when you change your name.” However, there seems to be some debate over whether an assumed last name is treated the same as a legal change of name. Many couples report not updating their SIN cards and having no problem filing taxes, getting paid, etc.
However, a little birdie told us things may get complicated when you go to collect your CPP (Canada Pension Plan) if your current last name doesn’t match the one on your SIN card. So, we suggest updating everything with your new last name, whether assumed or legally changed, to avoid any problems in the future.
To update your SIN, you’ll need to fill out an application and provide supporting documents. The application can be filled out online, by mail or in person.
If applying online you’ll need to provide:
a digital copy of an original valid primary identity document (you must provide both sides of the document if there is identity information on each side), like your birth certificate or certificate of Canadian citizenship
a digital copy of an original valid secondary document, like a passport or driver’s licence
a digital copy of a proof of address
a digital copy of an original valid supporting document (only applicable if the name on your primary identity document is different from the name on your secondary document or than the name on your online SIN application form), like your Marriage Certificate or Certificate of Change of Name
Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
You’ll need to update the CRA not just with your new name but also with your change of marital status. You have until the end of the following month after your status changed to notify the CRA (e.g. if you got married in September, you must update the CRA by the end of October).
While your change of marital status can be updated online, your change of name must be done by phone, mail or fax.
By phone: Call 1-800-959-8281(see link above for hours of operation) Be ready with your:
Social Insurance Number
Full name and date of birth
Your complete address
Your personal account open or an assessed return, notice of assessment, reassessment, or other tax document
Marriage Certificate or Certificate of Change of Name
By mail/fax: Send your letter to your tax centre (locations found here) Your letter must include:
original or certified true copy of one of the following documents:
a name change certificate from a provincial/territorial vital statistics department
a court order issued under an act on change of name
your old and new names
your social insurance number
your signature
Note: You can only change your name by phone if this is your first time changing your first or last name. If you have previously changed your name, you’ll need to apply by mail or fax.
Canadian Passport
Updating your passport with your new information can be tricky to time, so make sure you have knowledge of any upcoming travel plans before starting this process.
Visit this website (for change of name information) and this website (for application information)
Pay the fees ($120-160, plus any fees for expediting your application)
Receive your passport (by mail or pick up in person) in 10-20 business days plus mailing time. Click here for current processing times and to check the status of your application.
Important note for travel:
If you are travelling internationally, the name on your passport MUST match the name on your travel bookings (plane tickets, bus tickets, etc.). This can make honeymoon planning difficult as you may not have time to apply and receive your new passport with your new name before you leave.
Many couples choose to go on their honeymoon with their given names (using their current passport and booking everything under their given last name) as they don’t want to risk not receiving their new passport in time.
Work, voter registration, phone, utilities, etc.
After you’ve taken care of the big stuff, changing your name elsewhere should be relatively easy. You’ll usually realize you still need to change your name somewhere when you receive piece of mail addressed to your previous name. And it’s usually as easy as going online and updating your name information.
Here are a few more places you may want to update your name:
Work: Depending on where you work, you may need to provide formal proof of your new name. This can usually be done by providing your Marriage Certificate or Certificate of Change of Name or any of your new identification (e.g. new driver’s licence). Your work may need this information to update your payment and tax paperwork. You’ll want to make sure that your name on your pay stubs/T4 matches the name the CRA has come tax filing time, so be sure to contact HR.
You may also want to have your new name used in your work email address or other places around the office, such as the company directory.
Phone & utilities: Log into your online accounts for your phone and utility companies where most will allow you to update your personal information. Some companies may require you to phone or provide proof of name change.
Voter registration: You can update your name through the Online Voter Registration Service with Elections Canada. You can also update your information at your polling station at the next election. Note that at the time of writing (Sep 2021), online updating is temporarily unavailable as electoral data from the recent election is being processed.
The fun updates: Social media
Now comes the fun part: Changing your name on social media! There are no applications, fees, long lines or paperwork required. Simply log into your favourite social media apps and have fun updating and using your new name!
